Vietnam Women's Volleyball Squad Crisis Ahead of Asiad 20

The Vietnam women's volleyball national team is facing a severe squad crisis just weeks before the 20th Asian Games (Asiad 20) kicks off in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan (September 19 – October 4, 2026). After the 2026 Asian Championship in China with a depleted lineup, head coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt now has only three healthy outside hitters, two of whom are 17 and 18 years old. At the recent Asian Championship, Vietnam lost two key players. Vi Thị Như Quỳnh was absent due to health issues, while Nguyễn Thị Uyên suffered a serious injury during the tournament. Tactically, Vietnam's system relies on good reception to execute fast offense. When the reception line is weak, the team will often be forced into out-of-system situations, requiring high-ball attacks that young outside hitters cannot handle effectively. Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt may need to shift to a defense-first approach, prioritizing blocking and digging before launching counterattacks. This is a pragmatic but low-ceiling solution. A poor performance in Japan would drop Vietnam's ranking, disadvantaging future qualifiers. Time pressure is another factor. The 2026 Asian Championship and Asiad 20 occur in close succession, leaving little recovery or training time. Players from the domestic V-League are called up mid-season, affecting fitness and team cohesion. Despite the mounting difficulties, the team still has a chance if Coach Nguyễn Tuấn Kiệt selects the right player and adjusts tactics appropriately. Adding an experienced, albeit not outstanding, outside hitter could relieve pressure on Thanh Thúy and stabilize the reception line. However, with the 12-player limit and the youth of the outside hitters, Vietnam's most realistic goal at Asiad 20 may be to gain experience and avoid heavy losses against Asia's top teams.
