Chess: Data journalist refuses to predict when source file is empty

The analysis desk received an empty dossier. There was no original title, no source, no player’s name, no game, no tournament and no technical data. A long list of assessment fields were marked as insufficient information or impossible to evaluate. In a sports newsroom desperate for headlines, this could create panic. Professional discipline, however, does not allow me to fill the void with guesses. A reasonable fan may ask: why not publish a friendly prediction and give the audience an attractive name or result? The answer lies in the difference between journalism and entertainment. A prediction without any basis only adds more noise. In this case, the absence of processed information became the most important fact. The first step of a serious analysis process identifies the article title, source, format, information points, core viewpoints, entities, time sensitivity and source quality. All were empty. This might be a technical failure in data extraction, but it also tested how the newsroom reacts when evidence disappears. In chess, I cannot evaluate a player without knowing who played. I cannot judge an opening system without the moves. I cannot compare engine accuracy without a game score. A useful story can only be built on a named subject. When the subject vanishes, every claim becomes weightless. Stopping is not defeat. Stopping is the only way to preserve credibility. If a doctor receives an empty test result and still writes a prescription, no one calls that intelligent. People call it reckless. Data journalism is the same: no data, no diagnosis. The most useful lesson is simple: before debating a match, check whether the data actually exists. If not, the writer is expressing personal emotion, not practicing journalism. At my age, patience is not slowness. Patience is the ability to see the full picture. Today, I cannot say who deserves a title. I cannot say which team is climbing. But I can say that the workflow stopped me from publishing an unsupported article. That is the most valuable outcome.
