Vezenkov warns about repeated mistakes despite Olympiacos beating AEK in Greek Super Cup

Olympiacos defeated AEK 93-80 in the Stoiximan Super Cup semi-final, the opening event of the 2026-26 Greek basketball season. The result looked comfortable, but Sasha Vezenkov used the post-match press conference to issue a warning: the team keeps repeating the same mistakes in every game. Olympiacos built 15-17 point leads two or three times, yet allowed AEK to come back three times. Vezenkov said the team controlled the tempo but failed to control the game. He criticized the lack of consistency and the recurring errors that could become a bigger issue against stronger European opponents. Nigel Williams-Goss is expected to miss about two weeks due to injury, putting more pressure on the backcourt and on Vezenkov, who turns 31 this season. Based on my years of watching Olympiacos, this public self-criticism signals high internal standards, but also a real concern about late-game control. The Super Cup final on September 27 against Panathinaikos or PAOK will be an early test. A win would not erase the warning. The real question is whether Olympiacos can fix its lead-protection issues before the EuroLeague double week begins.
