Blank Report Numbers: Vietnamese Basketball and the Truth the Data Has Not Touched

I opened a tactical analysis report that had arrived at the weekend, and my screen was filled with blank spaces. “N/A – insufficient information, cannot assess.” The phrase repeated across tactics, player data, salary cap, risk and every roster decision. I have watched basketball for more than 40 years, but I have rarely seen a document that describes a match’s true nature with such emptiness. In Vietnamese basketball, the problem is rarely a lack of passion. It is a lack of structured data. Teams track points, rebounds and assists, but there is no open system for spacing, defensive load, fatigue or expected contribution. This makes every tactical conclusion fragile. A win can be celebrated as a miracle; a losing streak can be framed as a curse. Yet beneath both is the same reality: the variables have not been collected. During transfer windows, the noise grows even louder. People ask whether a club can afford a star, but not whether the team has the data system to deploy him correctly. Relying on reputation and YouTube highlights is not scouting; it is guessing. A promising young player must be compared with players from the same age group and position before being called a future superstar. I have spent my career learning that empty data is also a form of data. It reveals how a basketball culture operates. The old ways feel comfortable, but they are expensive.
