Indian badminton contingent for Asian Games 2026: Expectations and challenges

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has announced a 20-player squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan (September 19 – October 4). The lineup includes top stars such as double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and four members of the 2026 Asian Games men's team silver medalists: Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Kidambi Srikanth, and Arjun Ramachandran. Youngster Ayush Shetty also makes the cut, signaling a blend of experience and transition. Notably, India will field entries in all five disciplines (men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles) for the first time at an Asian Games, reflecting a broader medal ambition. However, analysts point to uneven prospects. The Satwik-Chirag pair remains India's strongest gold hope thanks to their aggressive attacking style, while 31-year-old Sindhu faces age-related injury and form risks. The veteran men's singles trio (Sen, Prannoy, Srikanth) are all past their peak, raising questions about stamina in a long tournament. On the coaching front, head coach Pullela Gopichand is supported by two foreign specialists: Irwansyah (Indonesia) and Tan Kim Her (Malaysia). However, Gopichand being the father of women's player Gayatri Gopichand could raise concerns about impartial resource allocation.
